Legislative Update – Your Voice Matters with Steven Aleman of Disability Rights Texas

The 85th Texas Legislature is in regular session from January through June of 2017. Join us to learn the status of important bills that impact people with disabilities in Texas. Find out what you can do to lend your voice to the process by supporting bills that are important to you. Parents historically play an important role in the legislative process. Your input matters!

About the Presenter

Steven Aleman has many years of experience in policy analysis, law, mediation, and teaching. He served as a policy analyst on Capitol Hill at the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service where he covered special education policy issues and legislation. While in DC, he transitioned to the field of law but maintained interest in, and continued to work on, matters affecting people with disabilities. On the legal front, he was an attorney at the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in DC. Since relocating to Texas in 1999, his solo private practice has focused on serving as an independent hearing examiner and mediator for Texas state agencies concentrating on contested cases involving children and adults with disabilities. Steven expanded his practice to include teaching on disability law in the College of Education at UT Austin through a graduate seminar on Section 504, the ADA, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Steven holds a Juris Doctor from George Washington University, a Master of Public Affairs from UT Austin LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Interview with a Journalist with Brian Rosenthal, reporter for the Houston Chronicle

In 2016, one of the biggest developments in Special Education in Texas was the uncovering of TEA’s decade long practice of limiting special education services to 8.5% of the student population, far below the national average. Join us for a special “behind the scenes” interview with the Houston Chronicle reporter who first broke the story and continues to advocate on behalf of the thousands of families affected by this story.

About the Presenter

Brian M. Rosenthal is a state bureau reporter who primarily focuses on Texas government and politics, health and human services and enterprise projects. He is most passionate about covering vulnerable people and the ways in which they are affected by their government. An Indiana native and Northwestern University alumnus, he previously worked for The Seattle Times as a government reporter whose reporting on that region’s broken mental-health system helped spur significant reforms and was cited in a landmark state Supreme Court case.
